OIAM Campus Liaison Works College Scene
Service has become the new revolution among college students. Many schools not only provide multiple service opportunities for their students but also require community service as part of students’ college experience.
Operation Inasmuch sees this as a huge opportunity to make use of the Inasmuch model on college campuses and in the communities where they are located. David Crocker, Ex. Dir. of OIAM, Inc. says: “The ministry has made a significant commitment to explore that opportunity to the fullest. We have employed a full-time Campus Liaison who will “market” Inasmuch to campus ministries and, in some cases, to entire student populations. “Our belief is that Inasmuch can be an effective model to mobilize large numbers of students in a single day of community ministry just as it is for congregations,” says Crocker. “We are very happy to have Holly Virden as a member of our team to work this arena. This is a major piece of our long-term strategy for growing and sustaining the Inasmuch ministry.”
Virden comes to Inasmuch from years of employment for the Luis Palau Evangelistic Association and leading her own marketing/publicist firm in Nashville, TN. Crocker says, “Holly brings the unique combination of vitality, energy, personality, and creativity to the ministry.” Commenting on this new opportunity, Virden says: “I’m excited to be part of the ministry that is fanning service into a revolution . . . one that is literally sweeping the nation!” She was attracted to Operation Inasmuch because of her own experiences in community ministry during her college years. “My lifestyle of compassion ministry was birthed as a young teen and college student which makes my task [as OIAM Campus Liaison] so much more vital in my eyes,” she says.
Virden’s vision for the collegiate version of Inasmuch reaches far beyond the expansion of Inasmuch into hundreds of college campuses; it includes the empowerment of student ministries everywhere to reach students for Christ. She says: “86% of all campus ministries report someone coming to Christ in their ministry last year. This is despite a continued decline in evangelism as a ministry program activity. Creating opportunities for service and helping students see the way social action connects with the gospel will continue to open doors for introducing students to Jesus Christ! His work through Operation Inasmuch is incredibly rewarding!”
