        Transformation

trans for ma tion, n, 1. the state of being transformed; 2. change in form, nature, appearance or character.  Such is this buzz word among congregational leaders—authors, pastors and hot speakers on the circuit.  If it’s transformational, it’s worth talking about.
Operation Inasmuch is touted as a transformational ministry.  If it meets the above definition, it would have to contribute to the change in a church’s nature or character.  But does it?!  When you think about it, transformation is rare.
Consider First Baptist Church, Mayodan, NC.  Last year they conducted their first Operation Inasmuch with more than 400 people involved—more than 100% of their average attendance!  “We didn’t set out to do that,” says Jimmy Lawrence, laymen at FBC, “but when the people responded so well to the challenge, we set the bar high.”
One of FBC’s Operation Inasmuch projects was making the home of paraplegic in their community handicap accessible.  “The gentleman was confined to 2 rooms in his home because he couldn’t negotiate the ups and downs,” says Lawrence.  “With about a dozen OIAM volunteers, we leveled his floors, made his bathroom handicap accessible, and built a long wheelchair ramp that ends up at his carport so he could get into his truck.”  The man said, “You have given me my freedom.”
A short time after the completion of this project, the man used his new freedom to attend First Baptist for worship.  After several Sundays of worshipping with his new friends, the man wheeled himself down the aisle at the end of one of the services and said he wanted to be a Christian and asked to join the church.  He is the first African-American to join First Baptist, Mayodan!
First Baptist Church, Mayodan, is a changed church!  No, they are a transformed church . . . and Operation Inasmuch was one of the instruments God used to bring about transformation.
